What Is Embryo Donation?
Embryo donation is a treatment used to help women with infertility issues to conceive a baby. The treatment may be necessary for women who do not have enough eggs or whose eggs are not viable. During the treatment, a donor embryo, or fertilized egg, is implanted into the uterus of the intended mother, who will carry the baby to term. This treatment provides the opportunity for women who may have been unable to get pregnant on their own to carry and deliver a baby.
The Embryo Donation Process
The embryo donation process brings the biological process of conceiving a child into a lab, where there is more control and therefore a higher chance of success. Embryo donation is usually a good option for single women looking to conceive on their own or for couples where both the male and female partners face some sort of infertility challenges. Because the embryo is an egg that has already been fertilized no sperm is needed, and the embryo is ready for implantation as soon as the recipient is ready. Before implantation, many steps are taken to create the embryo. The steps of the embryo donation process include:
Egg Retrieval
The donor begins the process in the same way an IVF treatment begins. Hormones are injected that will allow the woman to release multiple eggs at a time, rather than just one. Once these eggs mature, they can be retrieved during a simple procedure at the doctor’s office.
Fertilization
The donor eggs are fertilized using donor sperm or the sperm of a partner. This creates an embryo. The embryo can then be used by any couple who is having trouble conceiving a baby.
Implantation
The final step is to implant the embryo into the uterus of the intended mother. Once placed there, the embryo will begin to develop into a baby. If everything goes as it should, this will result in a successful pregnancy and the delivery of a healthy baby.
Already Conceived? Donate Your Remaining Embryos
When a woman does IVF treatment to help her conceive a baby, multiple eggs are retrieved and fertilized to create embryos. This is done to help increase the chances of pregnancy, as the first try may not be successful. If this occurs, there are then other embryos that can be used as a backup. However, one or two attempts may be all it takes to conceive a baby for some couples, leaving them with extra embryos. If you have already completed a successful round of IVF treatment and conceived a baby, you may be wondering what will happen to your remaining embryos. You may consider donating them to another infertile couple. While this can be an emotionally complicated decision, it may help you to remember that your embryos could make it possible for another couple to achieve their dream of starting a family. We can help you decided if donating your embryos is the right step for you.
