Procedures Involved in Advanced Reproductive Surgery
Infertility can be a multifactorial condition, some of which may require medical, surgical, or both treatments to achieve and maintain a successful pregnancy. The following surgical procedures can be helpful when treating infertility:
Hysteroscopy
This is a procedure that allows our professionals to look inside the uterus to diagnose and treat the causes of abnormal bleeding. Hysteroscopy is known to help with the removal of scar tissue and uterine fibroids, as well as the repair of uterine abnormalities.
Laparoscopy
This is a surgical diagnostic procedure used to examine the organs inside the abdomen or pelvis. Laparoscopy can help in removing ovarian cists, as well as treat tubal ligation reversal and endometriosis.
Egg Retrieval
Also known as transvaginal oocyte retrieval, egg retrieval involves ovarian follicles being drained so the fluid can be sent to the lab to find eggs. Eggs are then drawn out of follicles with gentle suction from the help of ultrasound images and a special needle.
The Benefits of Advanced Reproductive Surgery
Our reproductive surgical techniques and technologies allow for most procedures to be performed in a minimally invasive fashion. Our team’s advanced surgical approach is less invasive than traditional open surgery and uses small (or sometimes no) incisions to perform necessary procedures to access and even address fertility issues. Since there is little need for involved surgery, recovery and healing tend to be faster as well. It is important to note that while in vitro fertilization is often discussed in infertility, a thorough evaluation must occur before treatment can begin. Our surgical options can quickly and effectively address any issues so you can start IVF as soon as possible.
What Conditions Require Surgery?
If you’re experiencing difficulties getting pregnant, there could be several issues that could be contributing to unwanted fertility issues. We will be sure to look over your medical history and run a few tests to get a better idea of what you may be going through, though sometimes surgery is the best bet to addressing more complex issues. To remedy those more intricate fertility hindrances, we offer many non-invasive procedures that are beneficial to those whose fertility has been affected. The conditions we see that may require surgery include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Endometriosis
- Menstrual disorders
- Bicornuate uterus
- Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)
- Uterine abnormalities
- Recurrent pregnancy loss
- Uterine fibroids
- Uterine septum
- Erectile dysfunction
- Ductal system obstructions
- Varicocele
What to Expect From Advanced Reproductive Surgery
If surgical intervention is needed to assist infertility, our RMI physicians will go over in detail what is to be expected during the procedure. We do everything we can to deliver the treatment options to maintain or restore our patients’ reproductive function. Though many may be turned off to the idea of surgery, our advanced surgical solutions are far more minimally invasive than most, as laparoscopic and hysteroscopic procedures require little to no incisions. A short hospital stay may be necessary though many patients do not require this type of surveillance and are okay to go home the same day.
