Recurrent Pregnancy Loss Treatment in the Chicago area

Stages of Recurrent Pregnancy Loss

Loss of pregnancy is a physically and emotionally challenging ordeal. When pregnancy loss is repetitive, these feelings are magnified. Effective treatment for recurrent pregnancy loss is needed. Before effective treatment can be instituted, the cause of recurrent pregnancy loss must be determined. Human reproduction is a surprisingly inefficient process with up to 75 percent of fertilized eggs not producing live births. These 75 percent of pregnancy losses can be classified according to the time during pregnancy when the loss occurs:

  • Pre (before)-implantation - An embryo may not implant either because there is something wrong with the embryo itself that it can’t implant, or there is something in the uterine environment that doesn’t allow a normal embryo to implant.
  • Peri (around)-implantation - Peri-implantation pregnancy loss presents clinically as unexplained infertility and/or preclinical, occult or chemical pregnancy loss. There are usually no pregnancy symptoms, but a blood test reveals small amounts of the pregnancy hormone hCG in the mother’s blood.
  • Post (after)-implantation - Just as with pre-implantation and peri-implantation pregnancy loss, two major reasons for repeat post-implantation pregnancy loss exist: chromosomal abnormality or problems with the uterine environment.
