Hope for the Future

Fertility Preservation in the Chicago area

Cancer will affect approximately 1 in 50 women and 1 in 70 men by the time they reach their 39th birthday. Similarly, 1 in 500 children will also be diagnosed with a form of childhood cancer. Fortunately, advances in cancer treatment have increased the survival rate among these patients. Today, early cancer detection and multimodal treatment with surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation have improved the quality of life for cancer patients. Being able to look to a future beyond cancer also prompts these patients and their parents to ask the question, “Will I be able to have a family after my cancer treatment?” Fortunately, there is hope for fertility preservation, thanks to new cancer treatment options and advanced reproductive technologies. Often combined intervention by the patient’s primary physician/oncologist and a fertility specialist offers men, women and children the chance to be a cancer survivor AND a parent. Thanks to fertility preservation at the Chicago-area practices of Reproductive Medicine Institute, we have helped many patients start families after beating cancer.

The Key to Fertility Preservation is Information

We treat many different types of patients . Reproductive Medicine Institute treats all patients who are faced with the use of chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery that may alter their fertility, whether they have a diagnosis of cancer or other life-altering disease. Children, adolescents, and their parents often benefit from hearing the effect of treatment on reproductive organs and the availability of fertility-sparing treatment. In addition, hormone replacement therapy may be beneficial to promote more normal reproductive health. Adult survivors of childhood cancer often talk about the types of fertility treatment available to help them become a parent today. Adult men and women may need to hear about fertility preservation, and treatments to look to in the future. The physicians and our team are always available for consultation about fertility preservation possibilities at our Chicago-area practices, for you or your child in light of the planned or completed cancer treatment.
