Nasir Rana, M.D., M.P.H., Medical Director, Reproductive Medicine Institute
Nasir Rana, M.D., has devoted more than 30 years of his professional life to academic medicine and the clinical practice of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. He is one of the Founding Members of Reproductive Medicine Institute.
Dr. Rana received his early medical education from King Edward Medical College in Lahore, Pakistan, and graduated with a Medical Degree in 1969. In 1974, he completed his internship and residency training in obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN) at Cook County Hospital in Chicago and a postgraduate research fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke's Medical Center/Rush Medical University. Dr. Rana also holds a Master’s Degree in Public Health (MPH) from the University of Illinois School of Public Health in Chicago.
Dr. Rana was awarded a Certificate of Special Competence in the field of advanced laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery by the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists. He is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and American College of Surgeons. He is also certified in Robotic Surgery and utliizes these techniques in a variety of reproductive procedures.
Dr. Rana is the author or co-author of numerous scientific articles published in peer-review journals. Together, Dr. Rana and Dr. Dmowski established the Institute for the Study and Treatment of Endometriosis.
Dr. Rana is on staff at Good Samaritan Hospital in Elmhurst Memorial Hospital in Elmhurst, Weiss Memorial Hospital Chicago and the Oak Brook Medical & Surgical Center in Oakbrook.
After a long and distinguished military career, Dr. Rana retired as a Colonel from the U.S. Air Force Reserve with a rating of Chief Flight Surgeon. He is a veteran of the Gulf war, recipient of several military awards and decorations and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Dr Rana is also fully conversant in Urdu, Panjabi and Hindi.
John S. Rinehart, M.D., Ph.D.
For the past thirty-five years, Dr. John S. Rinehart has maintained an exclusive practice in infertility and reproductive endocrinology in the Chicago area. Dr. Rinehart provides his patients with quality medical attention by combining his academic training and broad clinical experience. He completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Johns Hopkins Hospital and his fellowship in reproductive endocrinology at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women's Hospital. Since 1985, Dr. Rinehart has been Board Certified in obstetrics/gynecology, and since 1988 in reproductive endocrinology, and re-certified in his subspecialty in 1999. In addition, Dr. Rinehart completed his law degree with a concentration in health law at DePaul University College of Law, Chicago, in 2002.
Dr. Rinehart maintains his academic connection as an Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at both Northwestern University School of Medicine and the University of Chicago and through frequent lecturing, input to hospital-based ethics committees, and IRB-approved research studies. Dr. Rinehart is the Director of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at NorthShore University Healthcare (formerly Evanston-Northwestern Healthcare) and St. Francis Hospital, Evanston, Illinois. He regularly works with residents and medical students in clinical settings and classroom lecturing, and is sought after for his expertise in both medical and legal perspectives of fertility management. Dr. Rinehart is also a member of the Society of Reproductive Surgeons, the Society for Reproductive Endocrinology and the Society for the Study of Reproduction.
In 1986, Dr. Rinehart helped establish Evanston Hospital's first IVF program, one of the first private-practice based IVF programs in the country. In addition, Dr. Rinehart aided in the development of many innovative procedures and treatments for use in assisted reproductive technologies, and in response to the challenges of managed care, Dr. Rinehart helped form the nation's largest infertility physician practice management group. There, he served as the IVF Director of one of the nation's largest IVF programs. He continues to devote special efforts to ethics and reproductive care as the Chair of the ENH Ethics Subcommittee on Reproductive Issues, a member of the Ethics Committee at Central DuPage Hospital, and as an active member of the NorthShore University Institutional Review Board.to fertility preservation for oncology patients.
Dr. Rinehart continues to focus his expertise on providing comprehensive reproductive medical care to women, men and adolescents. As a Founding Member of Reproductive Medicine Institute, Dr. Rinehart leads the mission to a science-based center of excellence for reproductive endocrinology and fertility in the Chicago area.

Elena Trukhacheva, M.D., MSCI
As one of the field’s devoted female reproductive endocrinologists, Elena Trukhacheva, MD, MSCI, demonstrates a unique rapport and understanding of her patients. As a woman and a mother, she takes pride in providing comprehensive care and strives to bring hope and support to her patients. Dr. Trukhacheva is Board Certified in the specialty of obstetrics and gynecology and in the subspecialty of reproductive endocrinology and infertility.
Dr. Elena Trukhacheva has devoted her professional life to academic medicine, research, and clinical practice in the field of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. She received her medical degree from the Russian State Medical University in Moscow, Russia. She graduated magna cum laude in 2000 and received multiple awards for research and academic excellence during her studies. Dr. Trukhacheva completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Baylor College of Medicine, consistently rated among the top medical schools in the country.
Following residency, Dr. Trukhacheva entered a three-year fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at Northwestern University in Chicago. During fellowship she also received a Master of Science degree in Clinical Investigation. She has formal training in biostatistics, epidemiology, and the design of clinical research studies.
Dr. Trukhacheva is a speaker for the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She also serves as a reviewer for the Fertility and Sterility journal and leads the Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis International Society (PGDIS) committee for Clinical Applications. She is a clinical assistant professor in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Midwestern University, and is actively involved in teaching medical students and OBGYN residents at the Midwestern University and at the Illinois Masonic Medical Center.
Her clinical interests include In Vitro fertilization, previous IVF failures, special approaches for poor responders, preimpantation genetic screening and diagnosis, as well as advanced laparoscopic and hysteroscopic gynecologic surgery.
Dr. Trukhacheva is fluent in English, Russian, and Ukrainian. A native of Russia, she now calls Chicago home.
W. Paul Dmowski, M.D, Ph.D.
W. Paul Dmowski, M.D., Ph.D., one of the Founding Members of Reproductive Medicine Institute, has been practicing infertility in the Chicagoland area since 1971. Dr. Dmowski is Board Certified both in Reproductive Endocrinology and Immunology and in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Dr. Dmowski is well recognized nationally and internationally for his pioneering research in the fields of Reproductive Endocrinology and Immunology. He has published more than 300 original articles, textbooks, and textbook chapters. Since 1981, Dr. Dmowski has been a Tenured Professor of OB/GYN at Rush Medical College in Chicago.
In 1983, Dr. Dmowski established, and for many years directed, one of Chicago's first in vitro fertilization (IVF) programs at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke's Medical Center; then five years later, a second IVF program at Lincoln Park Hospital (formerly Grant Hospital) of Chicago.
Dr. Dmowski has maintained dedicated interest and research in the field of Reproductive Endocrinology and Immunology and the study of Endometriosis. During the 1980s, Dr. Dmowski evaluated and helped introduce into the treatment of endometriosis a group of hormones classified as GnRH agonists.
In order to better coordinate basic and clinical research, Dr. Dmowski founded the Institute for the Study and Treatment of Endometriosis (Endometriosis Institute) in 1988. Ongoing research at the Endometriosis Institute is focused on identifying the cause of endometriosis and on discovering better diagnostic techniques and treatment methods.
Carolyn B. Coulam, M.D.
Carolyn B. Coulam, M.D., is an associate physician at Reproductive Medicine Institute and is Board Certified in the specialty of obstetrics and gynecology and in the subspecialty of reproductive endocrinology. One of the first female Reproductive Immunologists in the field, she has also set other ‘firsts’ while simultaneously raising ten children of her own - five of whom are physicians themselves. More recently, her 16 grandchildren bring her interest in helping build families to a very personal level, which she shares with her patients.
Dr. Coulam graduated from the University of Utah College of Medicine in 1967 with a degree in medicine and a masters degree in biochemistry. She completed a rotating internship at Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital at Dartmouth College, and her residency at the Mayo Clinic, where she remained for 17 years. While on the staff of the Mayo Clinic, Dr. Coulam was chair of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and established the first in vitro fertilization (IVF) program at this institution, in 1983.
Dr. Coulam is known for the devoted care she provides to her patients and enjoys an international reputation for her contributions to medical/scientific education and research. She has more than 200 publications in peer-reviewed journals to her credit. While Dr. Coulam cares for patients with all reproductive disorders, she has special expertise in the area of Recurrent Pregnancy Loss, and is an internationally-sought speaker on the topic as well as issues involving reproductive immunology.
